Our Thoughts… Exposed!

October 9th, 2011

Thoughts

Every great invention, every powerful song, every stirring movie all began just as a simple thought.  An idea in their creators mind that blossomed into being.  Thoughts are the most powerful force in the universe.  They start wars, begin romances, make us rich or poor, sick or healthy.

Our Thoughts control our life.  From the time we wake up in the morning until we fall asleep at night we are constantly thinking, doing, Becoming.  But how do our thoughts go from being just a chemical reaction in our brains to this powerful force that can quite literally change the world.

The Mind

It all begins right in between our ears in our mind.  The mind is the place where the magic happens.  It is where we originate our thoughts.  It is where we process and filter our thoughts.  Our thoughts develop into emotions in our mind and these emotions move us to action.  There are two distinct parts to our minds.

  1. Conscious Mind
  2. Subconscious Mind

The Conscious Mind

The conscious mind is the part of the mind where all the thinking is performed, so we will refer to it as the thinking mind.  Ideas find their origination in our thinking mind.  Thoughts are sorted, filtered and processed in our thinking mind.  We choose to act or not act with our thinking mind.  It is the part of us that gives us our awareness, our consciousness.

The Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind is the part of the mind where our emotions take form.  It exists below our threshold of consciousness, the inner machinery of our mind.  It is where our habits take root and blossom.

Our subconscious or emotional mind only knows that which we tell it.  There are no preconceptions, no limiting beliefs, no fears, no self-doubt.  There is only what we put there.  It first exists in our conscious mind then it seeps through into our subconscious by our dominate thoughts.

The Process

Dominate thoughts

The Thoughts we think on a consistent basis become our dominant thoughts.  These thoughts are of our choosing and ultimately control how we view the world around us.  They are positive or negative, constructive or destructive.  When our dominate thoughts are positive then our view of the world reflects this in our attitude and our actions.  The same is true when our dominate thoughts are negative.  We became a negative person with an unpleasant attitude.

A man is but the product of his thoughts; what he thinks, he becomes.
Mahatma Gandhi

Results

As we focus our energy on what we want to become and stop paying attention to the self-defeating influences around us our results change as well.  Dominate thoughts create within us emotions and these emotions bring us to action.  These actions bring about results, either the results we want or those we do not.

Three steps to the results we seek:

  1. Attitude:  How we look at the world.  Created through our dominate thoughts.
  2. Habits:  Patterns of behavior either productive or counterproductive.  Positive thoughts and positive attitude will lead to positive habits.
  3. Discipline:  Controlled behavior.  Implementing positive habits even when we do not feel like it.

Action is no less necessary than thought to the instinctive tendencies of the human frame.
Mahatma Gandhi

Summary

Our thoughts when properly applied produce the results we want.  Thoughts turn to emotion and the emotion causes us to act.  These actions produce the results.  To get the results we want consistently requires three attributes, a positive attitude, positive habits and self-discipline.

The next post will focus entirely on attitude followed by habits and then discipline.
